Burrawong House
Historic Interior Design by Studio aem
A beautiful historic home design nestled in Palm Beach
A picturesque cottage in the heart of Pittwater, Burrawong’s period character radiates from its original sandstone blockwork and exposed beams. Defined by earthy textures, natural materials and aged metals set to patina over time, the house is a welcoming retreat for a laid-back family.
The historic cottage is distinguished by its original sandstone blockwork which is left exposed inside.
Rustic yet graceful, sandstone is celebrated for its glorious historic properties, and without doubt is the star of the show.
The main bathroom was gutted and renovated, laid with new terracotta tiles, micro cement walls and a freestanding copper and tin bathtub.
The existing concrete tub in the laundry was retained and juxtaposed with new travertine benchtops.
In Pittwater but exuding bucolic beauty, the storybook house features cobblestones, pitched ceilings, a farmhouse sink and roaring fireplace.
The gabled roof and beams add a sense of drama to the kitchen which now has an expanded footprint, allowing space for the micro cement range hood and built-in bench seat.
A dance between the past and present, richly detailed slimline joinery and travertine benchtops slide seamlessly into the heritage structure.
Connected to lush greenery through picture windows, balconies and double doors, the enchanting period cottage is wedded to the natural world.
Historic Heritage Home Design
The demolition of an existing bathroom permitted an expanded kitchen footprint, allowing for a built-in dining nook and enlarged bench with a generous farmhouse sink and traditional tapware. The removal of a dropped ceiling revealed a gabled roof, adding a sense of theatre further enhanced by a contemporary new micro cement rangehood with bullnose mouldings. Adjacent, the living room is a more intimate area for gathering around the cosy fireplace, its double doors unfolding directly onto a balcony nestled within the treetops.
With the relocation of the master bedroom to the southern end of the property, the ensuite was repurposed into the main bathroom. Historic details were restored, the interiors gutted and renovated with warm terracotta floor tiles, slimline sconces and a striking freestanding copper bathtub under a picture window.
To satisfy the family’s practical requirements, generous full height timber storage was added to the cobblestone-lined mud room. The home’s juxtaposition between old and new peaks in the laundry, where an original concrete tub was retained and reused alongside elegant travertine benchtops. A wall of colourful splashback tiles was designed for a playful touch, bringing personality to the warm yet functional room.
Motivated by rustic simplicity and surrounded by native flora, Burrawong perfects the harmony of modern living with heritage charm.
